Paris Fashion Week General Information

While the very first Fashion Week was held in New York, the core concept of a Fashion Week is actually derived from the “salon shows” that took place in Paris couture salons as early as the 1700s. The first recognized Paris Fashion Week was held in October 1973 and featured Haute Couture, Ready-to-Wear, and Men’s Fashion into one group showing by the Fédération Française de la Couture. In its modern form, Paris Fashion Week consists of a spring/summer and an autumn/winter event taking place each year at a variety of different locations throughout the city of Paris, with each year’s specific dates determined by the French Fashion Federation

Paris Fashion Week is one of the global “Big 4” Fashion Weeks that takes place each year (the others being London, Milan, and New York). The Big 4 Fashion Week schedule begins with New York, followed by London, then Milan, and ending with Paris. Along with numerous ready-to-wear shows, there are also men’s and haute couture shows and each year and famous labels such as Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Dior, and Givenchy host their shows in historical venues such as the Carrousel du Louvre and the Grand Palais.

According to the organizing body of the event (the Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode), this year’s spring/summer Paris Fashion Week will feature ninety-two brands that will host runway shows, presentations, and/or digital collection reveals. The event is planning on consisting of 37 physical runway shows and 35 physical presentations, with the rest of the shows and exhibitions taking place in a digital format.
