If you have been waiting for the right time to purchase your next luxury watch, there isn’t a much better opportunity than the Memorial Day luxury watch collection offered at Bob’s Watches. These watches have been hand-selected as some of our favorite patriotic watches.

For Memorial Day, many people across the country choose to honor our fallen heroes by wearing red, white, and blue. For watch enthusiasts, that might also mean donning a patriotic watch on your wrist. Rolex released several exciting watches in recent years with vibrant dial and bezel combinations, leaving us with plenty of red, white, and blue timepieces to browse through. We’ve compiled our favorite patriotic Rolex watches here.

Pepsi Bezel GMT Master II 126710BLRO

"126710BLRO"

The red and blue Pepsi bezel has been a cornerstone of the GMT Master collection since the first reference came to market in the 1950s. It features a red and blue insert to distinguish between day and night hours and 24-hour graduations in white. When choosing a patriotic watch to wear, it doesn’t get any more on the nose than the Pepsi GMT Master. Even more popular is the Pepsi GMT Master in stainless steel.

For decades, the famed red and blue bezel featured an aluminum insert. Around the mid-2000s, the material was discontinued in favor of more resilient ceramic, aka “Cerachrom.” The first instance of a Pepsi bezel in ceramic didn’t hit the market until 2014 when Rolex released the white gold GMT Master II ref. 116719. It would take four more years until we would see the triumphant return of the Pepsi Bezel on stainless steel via ref. 126710. It debuted on the 5-piece link Jubilee bracelet but has also since become available on the Oyster bracelet. The newer-model Pepsi Rolex GMT Master II also takes advantage of the newest dual-time movement, the cal. 3285. Collectors will appreciate such modern amenities as Chromalight lume on the dial, 904L Oystersteel, and the Triplock waterproof screw-down crown.

"Q&A

Chief Commercial Officer at Bob’s Watches, Douglas Kaplan, sat down with Oris CEO of the Americas, VJ Geronimo, to host an open Q&A that covered topics such as pivotal points in the brand’s history and the pre-owned market. Oris has been in business for over a century and is one of the last mainstream independent Swiss watch manufacturers and one of the few watchmaking companies operating today without the restraints of a corporate structure.

One interesting topic during the Q&A was the Diver’s 65, which VJ credits for putting the brand on the map with the true die-hard watch enthusiasts – like many collectors in attendance that evening. The irresistible neo-vintage collection brought renewed attention to the brand when it came to market in 2015.

VJ also spoke on Oris and their unique relationship with Bob’s Watches. Working directly with a Swiss brand is groundbreaking for a pre-owned platform. VJ explained that Oris chose Bob’s Watches over other companies because we are reputable and treat the Oris brand correctly. Many readers might also be surprised to learn that Oris includes a limited warranty with every Oris watch you buy from Bob’s.

"VJ

Lastly, the mic was given to the audience, who had some very intriguing questions for VJ, such as how did the popular 2023 Oris ProPilot X Kermit come to be? We were not surprised to learn that the cheeky green watch was not born out of necessity but rather as a way to make people smile, entertain them, and make them happy.

The Watches, Wheels, and Whiskey event was certainly one for the books. After all, you rarely see the Batmobile and the prized Tiffany Blue Patek Philippe Nautilus in the same room. Hope to see you all at the next Bob’s Watches event!

High-End Cars & Luxury Watch Spotting

Where there are swanky cars, high-end watches are sure to follow. And the watch spotting at the Motorcar Cavalcade did not disappoint. Despite the sweaters and jackets worn that day to shield many of the 2,000 guests from the unusually cold (for South Florida) temperatures, most were happy to pull up their sleeves to show us their watches.

A few of the standout timepieces on the attendees’ wrists included an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak a Breguet Reine de Naples, and a Cartier Santos chronograph. There was also a married couple wearing a pair of F.P. Journe pieces, which is, as I’m sure you’ll agree, a fantastic way to sport a his and hers set. It wasn’t just pricey watches either; we saw a MoonSwatch Jupiter, which of course was part of the last year’s most hyped watch collection to hit the market thanks to a collaboration between Swatch and Omega.

Unsurprising to us, about 80% of the watches that were present at the Motorcar Cavalcade were luxury Rolex watch models. With a sea of GMT-Masters, Submariners, Sky-Dwellers, Day-Date Presidents, Daytonas, Yacht-Masters, and some vintage numbers, the Rolex catalog was well represented. It was also interesting to note that we could tell that plenty of these watches were loved and worn regularly as indicated by the small scratches, dings, and other signs of solid wrist time. We love that; there’s no need to be too precious about your watches – even the high-end watches – these are meant to be worn and enjoyed as much as possible!

What are Stella and Specialty Dials?

When it comes to Rolex’s classic dress watch collection, the company has remained true to the same design codes for decades. However, there are a few instances in the brand’s history when they’ve explored different design elements, such as colorful specialty or Stella dials. These watches are coveted not only because they are unlike anything else in the Rolex catalog but also because they were produced in such small quantities and are becoming increasingly hard to find on the pre-owned market.

Rolex Stella dials were sold from the 1970s until around the early 1990s. While the rest of the offerings in the Rolex catalog sported muted dials, such as black, white, silver, and champagne, Stella dials are distinguished by colorful, lacquered enamel dials. These striking dials were produced primarily for the market in the Middle East and are almost entirely exclusive to the Day-Date collection. Specialty dials are a lot like Stella dials because they also have what would be considered unusual design elements for Rolex, including uncommon dial colors and gemstone hour markers.

Rolex Day-Date President 1803 – Green Stella Diamond Dial

"Rolex

ITEM: 127382 CC

Rolex produces the Day-Date exclusively in precious metal, with yellow gold being one of the most common. This example pairs the green dial with 18k white gold and is among the rarest we’ve ever seen in the Day-Date collection. Brilliant and baguette-cut diamonds serve as the hour markers alongside Tritium lume in a creamy patina.

The Day-Date made history when it came to market in the 1950s as the first wristwatch to display the day spelled out in full on the dial, never abbreviated. The dial also features Rolex’s signature jump date mechanism at 3 o’clock, making this watch just as functional as it is handsome. The Day-Date is also commonly distinguished by a “President” bracelet with semi-circular links and a hidden Crownclasp, as seen on this green Stella dial Rolex. We doubt we’ll ever see another Day-Date quite like this one.

Rolex Day-Date President 18038 – Coral Stella Diamond Dial

"Rolex

ITEM: 124315 CC

Rolex recently released a Stella-inspired collection of Oyster Perpetual watches in similar hues as the original 1970s lacquered dials, including coral red. This Day-Date ref. 18038 is particularly valuable because it hails from the original Stella collection and features the recently-revived coral red dial. In addition to boasting an original Stella dial, you’ll also enjoy the convenience of the caliber 3055 Perpetual movement with a Single Quickset function for the date, a waterproof Oyster case, and automatic winding technology. The glittering diamond hour markers, rich red dial, and 18k yellow gold finish have all the makings of a cult classic.

Rolex Day-Date President 1803 – Oxblood Stella Dial

"Rolex

ITEM: 126631 CC

Compared to the other dial colors included in the Stella collection, Oxblood is arguably the least flashy and, therefore, more sought-after. It’s elegant and versatile and looks outstanding on this yellow gold Day-Date. We couldn’t dream of a more suitable Stella dial combination. Features include matching yellow gold indices and hands, Tritium lume, the date at the 3-hour marker, and the day spelled out in full at the 12-hour marker. The 36mm case and exclusive President bracelet will flatter any wrist.

Rolex Day-Date 1803 – Coral Stella Dial

"Rolex

ITEM: 126763 CC

This Stella dial Rolex is special for many reasons, and not just because it features a rare dial. First, the watch is presented in pink gold, a metal finish we rarely see on a vintage Rolex Day-Date. Additionally, this ref. 1803 wears on the 5-piece link Jubilee bracelet instead of the usual Day-Date President bracelet with three-piece links. It’s a stunning collector’s item that is made even more remarkable because it also sports a unique Stella dial in a vibrant coral hue. This is the watch to buy if you’re in the market for a special Rolex that turns heads.

Ladies Rolex Datejust 6917 – Oxblood Stella Dial

"Ladies

ITEM: 143883 CC

Stella dials are more common on the Day-Date. However, Rolex furnished some examples of the Lady-Datejust with the rare, lacquered dial, including the vintage ref. 6917. Rolexes outfitted with the Stella dial are usually on the higher end of the price spectrum, but our example here has an entry-level price of just under $10k. It’s an excellent opportunity to gift your loved one a coveted Stella dial Rolex without breaking the bank.

The Tritium lume on the hands and above the hour markers have aged to a matching creamy patina. Keen-eye collectors will also appreciate the cracking – aka crazing – present on the dial, a rare characteristic only found on vintage lacquered dials.

Rolex Day-Date President 118238 – Blue Vignette Diamond Dial

"Rolex

ITEM: 135605 CC

Rolex released the Day-Date ref. 118238 in 2000, making it the “newest” specialty dial watch in our guide. It was the first yellow gold 6-digit Day-Date ever produced, replacing ref. 18238, and features a slightly more contemporary aesthetic. As a modern Rolex, our example exhibits only minor signs of wear, including a solid link bracelet with little to no stretch.

It also includes a fascinating vignette dial characterized by a lovely blue gradient that is darker around the dial’s perimeter. Diamonds are hand-set in yellow gold surrounds, adding just the right amount of luxury to the dial.

Rolex Day-Date President 18238 – Black Onyx Dial

"Rolex

ITEM: 133192 CC

The black onyx Rolex dial is made from genuine stone and is distinguished by a pitch-black hue that contrasts sharply against the yellow gold finish. It also does not have any hour markers, a feature many Rolex enthusiasts will find desirable. Our example hails from the 5-digit collection, featuring scratch-resistant sapphire and the high-beat cal. 3155 Perpetual movement. What’s nice about this watch is that it also features a convenient Double Quickset function that allows the wearer to adjust both the date and day with a quick twist of the crown.

Rolex Datejust 16238 – White Index Dial

"Rolex

ITEM: 133067 CC

The Datejust debuted in 1945 to much acclaim because it was the first mechanical wristwatch to feature an automatically changing date mechanism. The inaugural model included a yellow gold finish, a waterproof Oyster case, a textured bezel, and a 5-link Jubilee bracelet, just like the example we have here.

Instead of an opulent dial like the rest of the watches in this guide, ref. 16238 features a classy white dial adorned with yellow gold index hour markers, centrally-mounted hands, and a black railroad chapter ring. The white dial Datejust is the perfect holiday gift because it’s so timeless and versatile.

Rolex Date 15037 – Blue Diamond Dial

"Rolex

ITEM: 110503 CC

The Rolex Date is the smaller cousin of the Datejust. While the Datejust measures 36mm in diameter, the date boasts a modest 34mm case. It’s the perfect size and weight for anyone in the market for an everyday watch or stylish weekender. The blue dial on this example of the Date ref. 15037 features a striking sunburst finish that radiates from the center and contrasts nicely against the yellow gold finish. Diamonds circle the dial alongside tritium lume and matching yellow gold hands. Gold text ties the entire watch together.

The blue dial on this example of the vintage yellow gold Rolex Date features a desirable matte finish that almost appears purplish. Other features include Rolex’s iconic Date mechanism at 3 o’clock, Tritium lume, and yellow gold hands. With its boxier acrylic crystal, older-style case, and rivet link Oyster bracelet, this Date exudes the retro aesthetic many avid luxury watch collectors seek. It’s a memorable statement piece that will always hold a special place in your watch box. And the best part is that you can buy this gold and diamond specialty dial Rolex for under $13k.

It doesn’t have hour markers, a design element that allows the wearer to appreciate the stone’s beauty and keeps the dial from appearing too cluttered. The golden tones of the dial mirror the rich 18k yellow gold finish of the watch, creating a perfectly cohesive design that transcends time and fashion.

Cocktail watches typically resemble fine jewelry, featuring ornate design elements, smaller cases, precious metals, and gems. They have the potential to be cherished heirlooms because they hold their value well and boast very distinctive design sets. The hidden dial Cocktail is one of the most unusual Cocktail watches we’ve ever received. It features a classic Cocktail design set comprised of a petite round case and a mesh-link bracelet in white gold.

What makes this Cocktail watch so special is the diamond-encrusted outer case that swings open to reveal the watch case inside. At first glance, one might mistake this Rolex for an elaborate piece of jewelry. But, of course, it is so much more than that.

Specialty Dials

Rolex Day-Date President 118238 – Blue Vignette Diamond Dial

ITEM: 110503 CC

The Rolex Date is the smaller cousin of the Datejust. While the Datejust measures 36mm in diameter, the date boasts a modest 34mm case. It’s the perfect size and weight for anyone in the market for an everyday watch or stylish weekender. The blue dial on this example of the Date ref. 15037 features a striking sunburst finish that radiates from the center and contrasts nicely against the yellow gold finish. Diamonds circle the dial alongside tritium lume and matching yellow gold hands. Gold text ties the entire watch together.

Rolex Date 15037 – Matte Blue Diamond Dial

ITEM: 152175 CC

Ladies Rolex Datejust 6917 – Coral Dial

ITEM: 152073 CC

Here, we have another gorgeous example of a stone dial Rolex watch, this time on the popular Lady-Datejust. The coral dial is void of hour markers, letting the unique striations of the stone shine. Since this dial is made of a natural material, it is completely unique. No other coral dial Rolex will look exactly like the watch offered in the Bob’s Watches/Goop collaboration. The warm tones of the coral dial pair nicely with the yellow gold finish, creating a Rolex that will look lovely on just about any wrist.

Ladies Rolex Datejust 6917 – Tiger Eye Dial

ITEM: 142903 CC

The Tiger Eye dial is made from genuine chatoyant gemstone and is distinguished by layered brown and gold tones. Like any other stone dial, the exact design of the Tiger Eye on this Rolex is unique.

Cocktail Watches

Ladies Rolex Cocktail – Hidden Dial

ITEM: 138293 CC

Ladies Rolex Cocktail – Diamond Bezel

ITEM: 151590 CC

This edition of the Rolex Cocktail is fascinating. It features an intricate filigree-style mesh bracelet and a small round case surrounded by a diamond-encrusted bezel. As a stand-alone statement piece, this Rolex is exceptional. We also think it would look lovely stacked with other bracelets- the possibilities are endless. This specialty dial Cocktail Rolex also happens to be one of the most affordable watches in our guide at just under $7k. It’s an excellent introductory Rolex if you’re in the market for a Rolex with character and immense collectability.

The Bob’s Watches x Goop collaboration boasts a unique dial Rolex to suit nearly any wrist, from rare Stella dials to those in genuine stone or sprinkled with diamonds. Check out the entire collection here: https://www.bobswatches.com/rolex-stella-dial-watches
The post Best Women’s Watches for Investing: Rolex Stella Dials – Exclusive Retail Partnership with Goop appeared first on Bob's Watches.
[
}

https://www.bobswatches.com/rolex-blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/20JM5724-Edit-1.jpg
Events" ]

What Is Rolex?

Rolex is considered one of the premier brands in luxury watches, and is arguably the most well-known of them all. The Swiss-originated company began in 1905 and quickly established itself as a quality craftsmen in the field. Rolex watches are often known for their intricacy and attention to detail. They spare no expense in terms of engineering and design for their creations.

These watches emit an air of style and luxury. Their designs can range from simple to athletic and even extravagant. Many of their designs stand the test of time, remaining relevant and reliable decades after manufacturing.

There are two types of people who seek after Rolex watches. The first are those who see them as a worthy investment, and luxury watch enthusiasts who appreciate the detail and craftsmanship that goes towards every model.

Indeed, Rolex is the pinnacle when it comes to product quality. The brand is also innovative, featuring some of the very firsts in the industry. They created the first water-resistant watch and the automatic winding system.

Another reason people want them is that Rolex watches retain their value over time. Some products are in-demand because of their limited manufacturing, increasing their price significantly.

Rolex History in Paris Masters

Rolex first became a partner of the prestigious indoor event in 2007, when they were named the Official Timekeeper. From there, they continued supporting the event, making their professionalism and quality known. It was not the first time Rolex had worked in professional tournaments. They have already had decades of experience working in the same capacity for Grand Slam tournaments.

Under Rolex, there have been many famous names that have won championships in the Paris Masters event. In 2008, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga brought pride to his home country, becoming the first Frenchman to win under Rolex. Other names that have won the event include Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, and Daniil Medvedev.

Points and Prize Distribution

At the Paris Masters, points are awarded to players who can reach the next qualifying round, increasing as they progress. The highest points awarded would be to the event winner at 1000 points, the same in both singles and doubles competitions. From there, the points go down to 600 for the finalist.

The prize money, on the other hand, is much higher for singles competitors. The singles winner of the event receives over €336,000, while the finalist gets €187,000. The winning team in the doubles event gets €70,000, while the finalist will get €50,000. Prize money for singles is distributed until the first qualifying round of participants. The doubles will only get cash prizes if they reach the round of 32.

Participants

The singles competition featured many big names, with seven out of the ATP ranked top 10 qualifying for the tournament. The biggest names among these were Novak Djokovic, ranked at the top with multiple Paris Masters tournament wins. Next to him was Daniil Medvedev, aiming to get another win under his belt following his 2020 run. Other names included in the event were:

 1. Stefanos Tsitsipas
 2. Alexander Zverev
 3. Andrey Rublev
 4. Casper Ruud
 5. Hubert Hurkacz

There were also many notable names who withdrew from the event because of injury or because they had already qualified for the ATP finals. After their withdrawal, the event sought out other participants. Some of the names that withdrew before the tournament include:

 1. Matteo Berrettini
 2. Roger Federer
 3. Rafael Nadal
 4. David Goffin

For the doubles event, two top 10 pairs participated. The Croatian duo of Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic were the top seeds. Rank 7 US and Britain Duo Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury were also at the event. Other single competitors also entered the tournament with a partner as wildcards or intended to join the doubles event.

The Singles Event

The singles event drew the most attention because of its competitiveness as players fought to solidify their standings. As with any high-profile tournament, some upsets occurred.

One of them was Stefanos Tsitsipas, entering 3rd in the rankings but losing in the second round, a relative newcomer to the professional scene. Current ninth rank Jannik Sinner also lost in the second round to Carlos Alcaraz. However, it was a tough fight, with Alcaraz being a former number four ranked player with five singles titles under his name.

Many players in the tournament were not defending points because most of the previous year was non-mandatory. Only five of the seven top ten players made it to the playoffs. Among the mix were two top 60 players, James Duckworth and Hugo Gaston. Duckworth faced elimination against the seventh rank Hurkacz, while Gaston had a match against last year’s winner in Medvedev.

Daniil Medvedev quickly made it to the finals after a dominant semi-final match against Alexander Zverev. On the other side of the bracket, Novak Djokovic rallied to a comeback against Hurkacz. The finals were as most predicted, with the number one and two ranked players fighting for the championship.

Daniil secured the first among three rounds, but Novak quickly dominated the final two to secure his win. To date, Djokovic has won at least 88 ATP singles titles, and it was no surprise as he is considered one of the best to play professional tennis.

The Doubles Event

The doubles event was more of a wildcard tournament, with only a few highly ranked teams in the competition. The winners from last year consisted of Hubert Hurkacz and Felix Auger-Aliassime, but they decided not to defend their titles. All received a bye into the second round, where the two top-ranked teams were eliminated.

Rank 11 team Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut would enter the finals after beating the 25th ranked team. On the other side of the bracket were two lower-ranked teams. The finals saw the two compete against German Tim Putz and Australian Michael Venus, who is known for reaching 7th in the doubles rankings. Putz and Venus stood the winner in the finals in a close match.

The 2022 Rolex Paris Masters

Rolex will continue to be the title sponsor of the Paris Masters event, with the 2022 edition returning to the Accor Arena. The tournament for the year will occur from 29th October to 6th November 2022. While there are no final details yet on the participants, the expectation is most top singles competitors will be there. This includes Djokovic, who is defending his title. Tickets are now on sale for day and night matches with multiple-day packages.

While you’ll see the Rolex logo during this event, the watch brand does not showcase too many of its prestigious products. It’s likely because the name speaks for itself, and they don’t have anything to prove.

One of the reasons why they’re involved in professional tennis is because it’s rooted in the history of Rolex. It’s often paired as a sport among the wealthier class. Many of the audience from these events are often people who’ll pay to own and display their Rolex collections.

What to Expect Moving Forward

Rolex will continue its ATP partnership for the foreseeable future. Seeing that they continue to be the Official timekeepers of the four major Grand Slam events, it’s hard to see them making any change. Event organizers also love working with them because of their work quality and reliability.

As with any Paris Masters event, these tend to be highly competitive, and we’ll likely see the same in 2022. Enthusiasts and collectors should also watch out for any new product announcements in the event, as it can be a way to publicize their projects.

Is there a greater legend than Tiger Woods in the game of golf? We think not. The now-forty-something-year-old player, who turned pro in 1996, single-handedly transformed golf into a sport you wanted to play rather than one you might have mocked. The five-time Masters Champion, four-time PGA Championship winner, three-time U.S. Open champion, and three-time British Open champion brought style and athleticism to golf – and youngsters everywhere wanted to be the next Tiger Woods.

In the late-1990s, Tudor (Rolex’s sister company) signed Tiger Woods as an ambassador, and the brand even launched a range of Oysterdate chronographs bearing the player’s name. Following his partnership with Tudor, Tiger Woods then joined the TAG Heuer family in 2003, where he served as a spokesperson for eight years. Finally, in 2011, the Rolex group brought Tiger Woods back into the fold – and this time, as an ambassador for Rolex.

Since then, we’ve seen Tiger Woods wearing a Rolex Deepsea Sea-Dweller – the brand’s biggest and most capable dive watch. The thick and imposing 44mm Deepsea case is water-resistant to an incredible 12,800 feet (3,900 meters), complete with a helium escape valve, Cerachrom ceramic bezel, and a domed 5.5mm-thick scratch-resistant sapphire crystal. While Rolex does offer the Deepsea with a special D-Blue dial (released in honor of James Cameron’s historic solo dive back in 2012), Tiger Wood opts for the classic black dial version of the watch.

Louisville native Justin Thomas turned pro in 2013 and less than five years later, he became the youngest player to shoot a sub-60 round at just 24 years old. He won the PGA Championship in 2017 and in March 2021, Justin Thomas shot a final-round four-under-par 68 to win the 2021 Players Championship.

Justin Thomas has been a part of the Rolex family for a few years now and we’ve spotted him wearing some fantastic watches including a “Pepsi” GMT-Master II, a Sea-Dweller diver, and a steel and platinum Yacht-Master 40, just to name a few. However, these days, we’ve noticed Justin Thomas wearing the incredible white gold Daytona 116509 with a bright blue dial and red accents – including the Daytona name in red.

There are only a few Daytona references left in the current Rolex catalog with a metal bezel (instead of a Cerachom ceramic one) and the white gold 116509, which made its debut in 2016 alongside the yellow gold model with the green dial, is one of them.

In June 2021, Jon Rahm became the first Spanish golfer to win the U.S. Open. That was his first major tournament win and thanks to his performance during the 2020–21 PGA Tour, Jon Rahm was awarded the PGA Player of the Year for that season, in addition to the Vardon Trophy and the Byron Nelson Award.

As a Rolex golf ambassador, Jon Rahm has worn a few different Rolex watches, including two-tone yellow gold and steel Daytona chronograph and an 18k white gold GMT-Master II with a meteorite dial and blue and red “Pepsi” bezel. However, the watch on his wrist when he held up the trophy after winning the 121st U.S. Open at Torrey Pines was a stainless steel Rolex Sky-Dweller ref. 326934 with a white gold fluted bezel and steel Oyster bracelet.

Jon Rahm’s Sky-Dweller is the blue-dial version, which is the most popular dial option within the Sky-Dweller lineup and only available on the White Rolesor model. With two PGA Championship and two U.S. Open wins under his belt, Brooks Koepka won his four major championships in a two-year span from 2017 to 2019. Award-winning actor, comedian, and television host Jimmy Fallon is definitely a fan of luxury watches and he has been spotted wearing everything from Rolex and Patek Philippe to Bremond and A. Lange & Söhne. As far as we know, Fallon is not an official Omega brand ambassador; however, it certainly seems that the historic Swiss watch manufacturer was his timepiece of choice for this year’s Met Gala.

Those with a keen eye will have spotted a vintage Omega Speedmaster Mark II on Jimmy Fallon’s wrist throughout the evening. According to Omega, Fallon’s Speedy is from 1972 and it is immediately identifiable as one of the Mark II references due to its unique barrel-shaped case. First launched in 1969, the Mark II represents the first major redesign of Omega’s iconic chronograph, and it also holds the distinction of being the very first Speedmaster reference to not use a Hesalite crystal. The classic Omega Moonwatch is an undisputed icon of horology, but the Speedmaster Mark II is a significantly less-obvious choice, and it serves as a fairly good indicator that Jimmy Fallon is a true watch enthusiast.

As one of Omega’s official brand ambassadors, it is no surprise that American model and actress Kaia Gerber was wearing several different pieces from the brand at this year’s Met Gala. Although Omega is best known for its iconic Swiss-made luxury watches, the historic manufacturer also produces a range of jewelry items, including rings, bracelets, charms, earrings, and pendants. To complete her look for the evening, Gerber chose a pair of diamond-set Omega Aqua Swing earrings and a diamond Dewdrop ring, both in 18k white gold.

However, when it comes to her Omega watch, Kaia Gerber opted for an elegant model from the De Ville Prestige line that features a 27.4mm stainless steel case with a diamond-paved bezel. At the heart of Gerber’s watch is a black lacquer dial with diamond-set hour markers, while the quartz Omega Caliber 4061 movement powers a leaf-shaped pair of rhodium-plated hands. Completing Gerber’s Omega De Ville Prestige is a timeless and elegant black leather strap that perfectly matched her stunning black Oscar de la Renta gown.

American professional track and field athlete Noah Lyles is another Omega brand ambassador that was in attendance at this year’s Met Gala. Specializing in sprints, Lyles’ most recent achievement is earning a bronze medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games with an official time of 19.74 seconds in the 200-meter men’s final. However, while it was a bronze medal that he took home at this year’s Olympics, it was a solid 18k yellow gold Omega Constellation Co-Axial Master Chronometer that could be spotted on Lyles’ wrist throughout the event.

Noah Lyles’ Omega Constellation is one of the 39mm models from the current collection that follows the same general format as the original Constellation Manhattan model from the 1980s. Fitted with a matching solid gold bracelet, Lyles’ Constellation is certainly among the premium configurations available and as it is one of the full-gold models, it is powered by the Co-Axial Caliber 8801 movement, which features an 18k Sedna gold rotor and boasts METAS Master Chronometer Certification. Additionally, Lyles’ specific example is fitted with a silvery white dial with yellow gold hour markers that perfectly matched the all-white suit by Pyer Moss that he was wearing at the event.

Closing out this year’s Met Gala with a surprise performance was Canadian singer Justin Bieber, who returned to the stage after a three-year hiatus to perform four of his biggest hits for those in attendance. Just a few days ago, Bieber won Artist of the Year at MTV’s Video Music Awards (VMAs), and he continued to ride the momentum into his performance at his first-ever Met Gala appearance with his wife Hailey Baldwin.

Although the Met Gala is typically an event where celebrities push the boundaries with their outfits, Justin Bieber opted for a more pared-back look, wearing a black suit by La Maison Drew. However, despite his somewhat traditional and classic wardrobe, Bieber did go all-out when it came to his watch, selecting a solid 18k yellow gold Rolex Daytona with a champagne dial and matching gold Oyster bracelet. Between its gold case, gold bracelet, gold-colored dial, and gold tachymeter bezel, Bieber’s watch is just about the most-gold Daytona available, and the understated nature of the rest of this outfit really allowed this statement-worthy Rolex to take center stage.

The Met Gala is easily one of the top fashion highlights of the year, with many of the world’s top celebrities showing up in truly head-turning attire that you simply won’t see at any other red carpet event. No star-studded evening is complete without some proper watch-spotting and just as you might imagine, there were a number of noteworthy pre-owned luxury watches that could be seen on the wrists of the attending celebrities.
The Met Gala is a fundraising event that benefits the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York City, and it marks the opening of the institute’s annual fashion exhibit. Each year’s Met Gala celebrates the theme of that year’s Costume Institute exhibition, and guests are expected to choose their fashion for the evening to match the theme. Instead of the emphasis being on simply looking elegant or flattering, dressing for the Met Gala is really more about fully embracing the theme for the exhibition, and this year’s theme is “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion.” So, what luxury watches did the attending celebrities choose to wear for the event?
Jimmy Fallon – Omega Speedmaster Mark II

Jimmy Fallon’s Speedmaster Mark II:
– Reference Number: ST 145.014
– Case Size: 41.5mm
– Materials: Stainless Steel
– Features: Time w/ Running Seconds, 12-Hour Chronograph
– Dial: Black w/ Luminous Hour Markers
– Movement: Omega Cal. 861 (Manual)
– Strap/Bracelet: Stainless Steel Bracelet
Click here for our Ultimate Buying Guide on the Omega Speedmaster.

Award-winning actor, comedian, and television host Jimmy Fallon is definitely a fan of luxury watches and he has been spotted wearing everything from Rolex and Patek Philippe to Bremond and A.
James Bond and luxury watches have a strong and long-standing connection that is even older than the iconic Hollywood films themselves. James Bond’s creator Ian Fleming specifically wrote in his original books that Agent 007 wore a Rolex watch, and when James Bond appeared for the very first time on the silver screen, it was a Rolex Submariner that was strapped to his wrist. Over the years, James Bond has been played by numerous different actors, drove countless different cars, and (of course) has worn many different watches – and every single Bond fan seems to have their own personal favorites.

The latest James Bond movie, No Time to Die will be the 25th film in the James Bond franchise and it marks Daniel Craig’s fifth and final appearance as Agent 007. Originally scheduled for release in November 2019, the launch of the film has already experienced several delays due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. However, it looks like we are finally going to get a chance to see No Time to Die this year with its world premiere currently scheduled to take place at the Royal Albert Hall in London on September 28th. To get ready for the upcoming release of No Time to Die, we sat down with a few of our industry friends and James Bond experts to talk about everything 007-related, including our favorite Bond movies, actors, cars, and watches.

Happy Labor Day Everyone!

Created in the late 19th century and made an official federal holiday in 1894, Labor Day is a time when Americans can pause to recognize the achievements of our country’s workers and pay tribute to their contributions to the nation as a whole. For many of us, it also symbolizes the end of summer and gives us the chance to celebrate with parties, barbecues, and street parades. However, a holiday specifically for the workers should be paired with an equally industrious watch, and the brand that makes the most robust, tireless timepieces in the business is (of course) Rolex.

It seems only right that the watch manufacturer who brought us the concept of the tool watch in the first place should be front and center on Labor Day. Therefore, we have put together a list of some of our favorite Rolex watches to buy that are worthy of commemorating such an important day.

If we’re going to talk about hardworking watches, then the Rolex Explorer II seems like the perfect place to start. The model is arguably the one that has stuck closest to Rolex’s roots, and it is also the one that best exemplifies the definition of a true tool watch. Big, strong, robust, and mechanically reliable, it is the piece that you could genuinely wear every day, no matter your occupation.

Released in 2011 and only superseded this year, the reference 216570 is from the fourth generation of the Explorer II and the first to offer a case size of 42mm. Equally important, it also reinstated the ‘Freccione’ GMT hand from the debut reference. The big, wide, bright orange indicator (taking its nickname from the Italian word for ‘arrow’) had been missing (and missed) ever since the very first example, the ref. 1655 “Steve McQueen” Rolex was discontinued in the 1980s.

However, unlike that model, the ref. 216570 is a true GMT watch capable of tracking two time zones at once thanks to the in-house Cal. 3187 movement giving independent control over the two-hour hands. The bezel has remained as a purely stainless steel component as well, not yet succumbing to the allure of Cerachrom ceramic as with many of the brand’s other sports watches. It is also fixed in place and non-rotating, which further distinguishes it from the Rolex GMT-Master II series, even though the two collections have shared a case and a movement for much of their respective histories.

As always, the dial choice is straightforward with the only options being black or white. Each imparts a definite personality on the watch, with the white “Polar” dial giving it a clean crisp look, while the black is more stealthy and understated. One interesting element with the latter is its ‘phantom’ hands, where the bases of all three main hands have also been painted black, giving the impression they are floating. If you are looking for a watch to wear all-day for the rest of your life, then the Rolex Explorer II is a definite contender, and with prices starting at around the $10,000 mark, it also happens to be one of the most attainable (at least for now).

First appearing in 1956, the Milgauss stems from the heady golden age of Rolex. The era that gave rise to the tool watch genre itself, it was the Milgauss added protection from electromagnetic forces (achieved through the use of a second, internal case acting like a Faraday cage), which made it aimed at scientists, technicians, medical professionals, and indeed anyone working with equipment giving off strong magnetic energy.

A fine watch, and one with a truly useful real-world application, the reason the Rolex Milgauss never enjoyed quite the same recognition as some of its siblings came not from a lack of ability, but rather a lack of glamor. It was pure bad luck to go into competition versus some of Rolex’s most iconic models of all time. In the space of just a handful of years during the mid-1950s, the brand also released the Explorer, the GMT-Master, the Submariner, and the Day-Date – and against watches built for adventurers, transcontinental travelers, deep-sea divers, and world leaders, the buttoned-down environment of the laboratory was never going to spark the imagination to quite the same degree. Even still, the Rolex Milgauss remained in production right up until 1988, when it was quietly discontinued. However, with the opening of the Large Hadron Collider at CERN in 2007, Rolex decided to commemorate the event by reinstating the model, and came back with the Milgauss reference 116400.

Now in an enlarged 40mm case, the handsomely minimalist watch was offered with either a black or white dial, both with simple baton indexes and smooth polished bezels. As a nod to its talents (and potential audience) the seconds hand was shaped as a lightning bolt just like original Rolex Milgauss watches from the 1950s. However, this time, it was finished in a vibrant orange hue to compliment the small accents present on the dial.

Our pick (an obvious Labor Day choice or not) is the white-dial example of the ref. 116400 Milgauss. Only in production for about seven years before it was replaced by the Z-Blue dial version, the white dial Milgauss is actually something of a rarity for the company. Rolex doesn’t make all that many white dial tool watches and so that, coupled with the limited availability in general, makes this particular Rolex Milgauss both an uncommon sight and a potential future collectible.

Another watch originally from the 1950s is the Turn-O-Graph, although since it is one of the lesser-known Rolex models and no longer in production, you’d be forgiven for it not being on your radar. Debuting in 1953, the Turn-O-Graph actually has a whole slew of firsts to its name, despite its ‘forgotten’ status among the brand’s numerous iconic models.

The Turn-O-Graph was the first serially-produced Rolex watch to be fitted with a rotating bezel (yes, even before the Submariner). That utility sets it out as the first official Rolex tool watch, as it meant the bezel could be used to track elapsed time. And one specific group for whom that feature was especially useful was pilots – which led to the Turn-O-Graph’s more commonly used nickname: the Thunderbird.

The USAF’s aerobatic stunt team (the Thunderbirds) adopted the watch in the late ‘50s, with the novel bezel proving valuable for navigation calculations. As with the Milgauss, the Rolex Thunderbird struggled for traction against better-known stablemates and was ultimately withdrawn from the catalog completely in 2011. However, examples are still readily available on the pre-owned market, with our top choice for Labor Day being the Turn-O-Graph ref. 116264, which was from the last generation of the model and listed as part of the greater Datejust collection.

The 36mm stainless steel case is topped with a unidirectional 18k white gold fluted bezel that features 60-minute gradations – very much a rarity in the brand’s history. Available in a small selection of dial colors, the white is arguably the most eye-catching, especially with the bright red seconds hand, date wheel, and “Turn-O-Graph” name. Inside is the in-house Rolex Caliber 3135, which is recognized as one of the very best mass-produced movements ever created and as faultless a performer as you could want. As an everyday, hardworking watch to accompany you for a lifetime, the Rolex Turn-O-Graph is the perfect companion.

The original Rolex Prince first appeared in 1928 as an elegant, rectangular model that became known as the ‘Doctor’s Watch’ due to the running seconds being given its own separate sub-dial, which made it easier for physicians to time a patient’s pulse. While it did its job well and could be found on the wrists of a number of high-profile wearers (even Al Capone was reportedly a fan) the hefty price tag and overtly Art Deco styling meant that it had its day by the 1940s.

More recently, Rolex brought the Prince range back, introducing four stunning models in 2005 as part of its out-and-out dress range, the Cellini collection. Often overlooked, Rolex Cellini models (named after the Italian artist, sculptor, and goldsmith Benvenuto Cellini) feature some beautiful designs, with classically sophisticated aesthetics and the brand’s only current foray into moonphase complications.

The ref. 5441/9 is unlike anything else you will see from the modern Rolex brand. The 27mm by 42mm case is crafted from solid 18k white gold, gently curved and features some stunning Art Moderne touches such as the deep parallel grooves at the top and bottom. The figure-eight dual dials have a slight overlap, with the main time-telling face given a mixture of Roman numerals and small batons for indexes, while the seconds counter has an unmistakable railroad edge. Outside of the dials, a beautiful circular guilloche pattern adds a textured motif and, almost uniquely from the brand, that level of finishing is carried over onto the bridges of the movement, which are visible through a display case back.

Despite making some of the best in-house movements in the business, Rolex just doesn’t show off its calibers in the same way that many other manufacturers choose to do these days, and so Rolex’s movement decoration is usually industrial at best. However, the “Godron Circulaire” pattern on the manual-wind Cal. 7040-3 is a joy to see, and the movement provides a 28,800vph frequency and 70-hour reserve from fully wound.

Sadly, the Prince was discontinued for a second time in 2015, with a lack of interest being the main fault once again. However, the Cellini Prince ref. 5441/9 remains a fantastically chic timepiece, a radical departure from the Rolex norm and definitely worthy of any well-dressed doctor.

The post Celebrating Labor Day The Rolex Way appeared first on Bob's Watches.

Rolex Explorer II ref. 216570

Explorer 216570 Key Features:

– Reference Number: 216570

– Production Years: 2011 – 2021

– Case Size: 42mm

– Materials: Stainless Steel

– Functions: Time w/Running Seconds, Date Display

– Dial: White w/ Luminous Hour Markers

– Bezel: Fixed, Stainless Steel w/ 24-Hour Scale

– Crystal: Sapphire (Flat w/ Cyclops Lens)

– Movement: Rolex Caliber 3187

– Water Resistance: 100 Meters / 330 Feet

– Strap/Bracelet: Oyster Bracelet

Shop The Collection

Daniel Craig wore a rose gold “semi-vintage” Speedmaster to the Golden Globes back in January but was apparently absent from this year’s Oscars ceremony. George Clooney, another Omega ambassador and avowed Speedy fan, was also apparently MIA. Instead, Omega enlisted the support of Riverdale star Cole Sprouse, who wore a Seamaster Aqua Terra 150M Co-Axial Master Chronometer 41MM.

The final two Omega watches spotted at the Oscars were both from the brand’s De Ville collection, Omega’s lineup of dress watches that are perfectly sleek and stylish for sporting with a tuxedo. Two-time Academy Award winner (for Moonlight and Green Book) Mahershala Ali, who made the Time list in 2019, wore an Omega DeVille Tresor Co-Axial Master Chronometer 40 MM with a subtle emplacement of diamonds on its bezel. And Game of Thrones star Alfie Allen wore a DeVille Prestige Co-Axial Power Reserve 39.5 MM. Also notably absent was British actor and Omega ambassador Eddie Redmayne, who can usually be counted on to sport an Aqua Terra or Globemaster on the red carpet
*Images courtesy of OMEGA.

The post Omega Watches Spotted at the 92nd Academy Awards appeared first on Bob's Watches.
[
}

https://www.bobswatches.com/rolex-blog/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Screen-Shot-2020-02-10-at-11.55.30-AM.jpg
Events" ]

Carbon might be sexier, but a titanium alloy taken from the aerospace industry seems to be a perfect match for Omega, which now just needs to convince collectors and athletes to shell out the $48K. This year from August 8th – 18th, car enthusiasts from all over the globe gathered along the scenic Monterey Peninsula in California for an exciting week of automotive fun. The 2019 edition of Monterey Car Week is now behind us, and as always, the week was packed full of some of the most amazing automobiles (and luxury watches) you have ever seen – all gathered in one place. In addition to the numerous exhibitions and auto shows, there are also ample opportunities for collectors to add to their collections. This year, the RM Sotheby’s Monterey auction featured some of the most rare and important vehicles on this planet. Bidding wrapped up Saturday evening with total preliminary sales totals coming in at $245.5M (although a number of other major sales will likely finalize over the next few days).

Highlights from the RM Sotheby’s auction included the 1994 McLaren F1 ‘LM-specification’’ that sold for a whopping $19.805M, a 1962 Ferrari 250 GT SWB that fetched $8.145M, and the 1965 Aston Martin DB5 “Bond Car” fitted with all the appropriate gadgets, which became the most expensive DB5 ever sold at public auction, pulling in a final sale price of $6.38M.

While the cars at Monterey Car Week are expectedly spectacular, the watches in attendance at the event are also equally noteworthy. Watches and cars are two things that pair together exceptionally well, both requiring a perfect balance of design, performance, ergonomics, and mechanical ingenuity.

Inspired by the remarkable cars featured in the RM Sotheby’s auction, we have collaborated with Sotheby’s to offer Watches Online: The Driver’s Collection – a specially curated selection of some of the world’s most rare and desirable watches.

The luxury goods conglomerate is staging an “experiential” pop-up called Arcadium at the Shops & Restaurants at Hudson Yards from July 12–25. Jaeger-LeCoultre (whose wares are available there) is one of the highlights of the event – part of its stated initiative to “reinforce its ambition to continuously evolve and provide more innovative experiences for its clients” – which plays into the growing trend we’ve been reporting on amongst watchmakers looking to engage with potential customers and sell them on their legend and prestige.

Aiming to “tell the story of Jaeger-LeCoultre, with a nod to the Maison’s heritage and craftsmanship, in a truly modern way,” the Arcadium exhibition space will be adorned with custom illustrations designed by local artist Justin Teodoro, whose style is very fashion-focused.

Augmented Reality and Watchmaking Demonstrations

The most striking feature of Arcadium is an “augmented reality” polo experience which highlights Jaeger’s iconic Reverso – a timepiece designed in 1931 that features a reversible case, which was created to meet the request of a client who was an avid polo player and wanted a watch that could withstand the rigors of a day on the field. The exhibition also showcases a virtual and interactive “On the Wrist” application that allows would-be customers to try on various JLC models before buying.

"Arcadium"

On July 20, the brand will also stage a special watchmaking demonstration that gives a taste of the 180 different crafts that make up the Jaeger-LeCoultre manufacture in Switzerland. Arcadium is free and open to the public seven days a week at The Shops & Restaurants at Hudson Yards (4th Floor).

Hours of operation are 10 am to 5 pm, Monday to Thursday; 10 am to 9 pm, Friday and Saturday; and 10 am to 5 pm on Sundays. Advance, timed ticketing is currently available through Eventbrite. So if you’re in NYC and are a fan of JLC, then this is definitely worth checking out.

The Bob’s Watches Collectors Dinner

With a private chef cooking up a three-course meal and ample drinks to go around, the intimate group of guests spent the evening laughing, swapping watch collecting stories, and reminiscing about times when you could pick up a vintage Rolex Daytona for only a few thousand dollars.

While the guest list was small, attendees included everyone from Eric Wind of Wind Vintage to Michael Morgan of Iconic Watch Company and well-known Southern California collector, Morgan King. Even Enzo, the friendly ‘Goldendoodle’ that belongs to Bob’s Watches CEO, Paul Altieri made an appearance to pick up any stray bits of food that might have been missed during dinner.

Following the meal, Morgan King surprised everyone by whipping out a couple of decks of cards and doing some astonishingly good magic tricks with them (it turns out that he is a member of the Magic Castle in Hollywood). We all know Morgan for his love of watches, but his interest in magic along with the hilarious performance that he puts on while he pretends to stumble through mind-blowing card tricks was something new to all of us.

Although the Bob’s Watches Collectors Dinner was all about enjoying each other’s company, the watches that could be spotted that evening are certainly worth a second glance. From a Rolex Paul Newman Daytona, to a ref. 5517 MilSub and a 2915-1 Speedmaster with an absurdly tropical dial, every single watch at the Collectors Dinner was one worth mentioning.

The 119th U.S. Open Championship is underway at Pebble Beach Golf Links in California, marking the sixth time that the gorgeous course in Monterey County has hosted the event. Over the next four days, golf’s top players will battle it out to win the U.S. Open Championship Trophy. Not only is the U.S. Open the third of the four major championships in golf, but also (as of this year), it has the largest purse of all four majors at $12.5 million.

Who will raise the trophy on Sunday evening and take home the winner’s share of $2.25 million? Odds are currently in favor of Rolex Ambassador Brooks Koepka, who if he wins, will have captured his third straight U.S. Open. Additionally, if he does win, we can’t help but wonder which Rolex watch will Koepka be wearing while holding up the trophy.

"Koepka"
Today marks the start of the 2019 U.S. Open, and we can’t help but wonder what watch the winner will be wearing this Sunday.

Brooks Koepka’s Past U.S. Open Wins and Rolex Watches

Koepka’s current dominance of the U.S. Open began in 2017 at the Erin Hills golf course in Wisconsin, when he beat out Hideki Matsuyama and Brian Harman by four strokes to claim the win. He took home the champion’s share of $2,160,000 for his victory – and on his wrist was the highly coveted, Rolex Daytona ref. 116500LN in stainless steel with a black ceramic bezel and white dial, which was released the previous year at Baselworld 2016.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BVgNZ8yF3u9/

The following year, Koepka did it again by winning the 2018 U.S. Open at the Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in New York, beating Tommy Fleetwood by just one stroke. In addition to padding his bank account with another $2.16 million, Brooks held the U.S. Open Championship Trophy for the second time. His Rolex watch of choice for that trophy ceremony was the newest Rolex 50th Anniversary Sea-Dweller ref. 126600, which had made its debut at Baselworld 2017 as the first Sea-Dweller to feature a larger 43mm case.

What Rolex Will Brooks Koepka Wear This Year?

It still remains to be seen whether or not Koepka will win the 2019 U.S. Open. However, regardless of if he reaches the top of the leaderboard or not, the champion golfer and official Rolex brand ambassador will still strap a Rolex onto his wrist after the match, as is the tradition.

But which one will it be? We’re thinking it might be the Everose Sky-Dweller ref. 326935 he’s been sporting recently – the same one he wore when he proudly held the Wanamaker Trophy after his win at the 2019 PGA Championship at Bethpage Black in May (and the same one he wore after he lost out to Tiger Woods at the 2019 Masters).

We’ll just have to wait until Sunday afternoon to see who will be crowned the 2019 U.S. Open champion and if that winner will be wearing a Rolex on his wrist.

"Koepka"
Will it be a Rolex watch that we spot on the winner’s wrist when they hold up the trophy?

We’re talking about the “Survival Instruments for Modern Heroes” event the brand just staged at the Minsheng Art Wharf in Shanghai, epicenter of one of the most important markets for high end watches these days. For the impressive happening, Panerai recreated an underwater labyrinth complete with aquatic creatures and deep sea caverns to highlight its extremely capable diving watches and chronographs, such as the Submersible.

With a clever combination of interactive and animated installations covering more than 8,000 square feet, the brand has simulated a 360° underwater experience that included sharks, shipwrecks, and other hazards and wonders of the deep.

A Focus on Heritage, Not Products

The Planet Omega exhibition is very much in-line with the growing trend for luxury watch manufacturers to make greater efforts to promote their brand, heritage, and values, rather than just the products that they offer. Many of these watch brands have been around for over a century, and their heritage and contributions to the greater watchmaking industry are just as much a reason to own their products as the physical timepieces that they produce.

In a concerted effort to directly engage with both customers and potential customers, luxury watch manufacturers have tried a number of efforts to promote their heritage. Other high-profile examples of this include Rolex’s new rolex.org site, which is strictly devoted to promoting their brand’s history and values (the “perpetual spirit” as they call it); and IWC’s new ‘Manufakturzentrum’, a new factory designed with a strong emphasis on a quality visitor experience, which is intended to be a new way for customers to appreciate their watches.

It covers all of the varied areas that Omega has influenced, from space exploration (how could one forget the iconic Omega Speedmaster) to the Olympic Games, and I think everyone will be able to see the unique impact our watches have had.”
Eddie Redmayne has been an Omega brand ambassador since 2015. (Image: Omega)
Redmayne, who became part of the Omega family in 2015, then added, “In just four years with Omega, I’ve been so impressed by the diversity of the brand. Their qualities of style, reliability, and precision have had such a wide-ranging importance throughout the world. It’s great to see everything come together in one exhibition. As an actor, I love stories and Omega certainly has many extraordinary stories to tell.”
Visitors to the exhibition will be able to explore seven distinct facets of Omega’s universe, including Olympic Games & Sports, Space, Glamour, Precision, Ocean, James Bond and Heritage. The exhibition will be open in Shanghai through May 12, before it continues on with a tour of China in 2019, and then commencing a world tour over the next several years.
The Planet Omega exhibition will ultimately make world tour after it spends 2019 in China. (Image: Omega)
We will keep you posted as soon as we hear about any plans for Planet Omega to come to the United States!

A Tribute to George Daniels

The exhibition, titled Independent’s Day, pays tribute to Dr. George Daniels, “the most talented master watchmaker of the 20th century.” The British-born Daniels, who died in 2011, created the amazing Co-Axial escapement, now widely used by Omega throughout the vast majority of their various watch collections.

Daniels first employed the mechanism in a modified Omega Speedmaster in early 1970s (one of his personal watches at the time), though the brand did not officially adopt it until 1999. A true revolution in watchmaking, the Co-Axial escapement is an evolution of the traditional lever escapement which has been in use for the last 250 years.

"George

The Co-Axial escapement works in conjunction with the oscillator to determine the speed and energy of the mainspring’s release. Its design makes the watch movement equipped with it more mechanically efficient and less reliant on lubrication than an otherwise-similar movement fitted with a traditional lever escapement.

While the Co-Axial escapement might have had the most marked impact on modern watchmaking, it is Daniels’ own creations which remain the most impressive part of his life’s work. Two of Daniels’ masterpieces – the Grand Complication pocket watch and the Anniversary wristwatch, both worth a fortune – are being offered for sale at the exclusive Hôtel La Réserve in Geneva on May 11, and will be part of the exhibition which runs from May 9 through May 11.

Featuring 13 Independent Watchmakers

Daniels is just one of 13 watchmakers featured in the exhibition and accompanying auction, including De Bethune, Philippe Dufour, Laurent Ferrier, Greubel Forsey, F.P. Journe, MB&F, and Urwerk – all of which, Phillips says, are carrying on Daniels’ legacy. “This will be the first time ever these watchmakers and watches will be united under one roof,” the auction house notes.

The timepieces include such “masterworks” as Philippe Dufour’s tryptic – Simplicity, Duality and Grande Sonnerie – as well as some one-of-a-kind watches by F.P. Journe, exclusive prototypes by Charles Fordsham, the Oval Tourbillon with detent escapement by Derek Pratt for Urban Jürgensen, and Kari Voutilainen’s first tourbillon pocket watch. Even better, the watchmakers themselves will be present during the exhibition to meet and greet enthusiasts and collectors.

Masters Week is here! Golf fans from around the world will be following the action at Augusta National Golf Course to witness who will win the tournament’s famed green jacket (and the lion’s share of the $11 million purse). As the first of the four annual major championships in professional golf, a win at the Masters is one of the most coveted in the sport.

The four-day tournament kicks off today (Thursday, April 11) and will run until Sunday, April 14. For a little bit of fun before the pros begin their Augusta campaign, we’re highlighting a few top golfers that will be playing at the 2019 Masters – that also serve as luxury watch ambassadors.

"Masters"
Do you know which luxury watch brands all of the top golf players represent?

The Rolex Golfers

Golf is one of the major sports that Rolex supports on a global scale, so it comes as no surprise that it counts some of the world’s best players as official ambassadors. Take Tiger Woods for example, who won the Masters in 1997 – his first major ever at 21 years old – and claimed victory at Augusta three more times after that (2001, 2002, 2005). Many are hoping to see Tiger Woods wear the green jacket again this year and if he does, he’ll probably be wearing his Rolex Sea-Dweller Deepsea D-Blue as he does regularly these days.

Like Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson has also won the Masters multiple times (2004, 2006, 2010) and is part of the Rolex golf roster. However, unlike most players, “Lefty” keeps his watch on his wrist while playing and he clearly favors Rolex Cellini models.

Jordan Spieth is also hoping to repeat his 2015 Masters win this year (and no doubt to avoid his 2016 meltdown). This young Rolex ambassador alternates between a few Rolex watches including the “Polar” Explorer II, a white gold Daytona on an Oysterflex bracelet, and an Oyster Perpetual 39 with a black dial.

The Omega Golfers

Along with Rolex, Omega is also a leading supporter of golf with its own lineup of golf brand ambassadors – and a collection of Seamaster Aqua Terra Golf Edition watches to boot. A veteran of the sport and Omega brand ambassador since 2003, Sergio Garcia finally won his first Masters in 2017 and wore a Seamaster Planet Ocean “Deep Black” as he slipped on his green jacket.

While Rory McIlroy has yet to claim a major win at the Masters, he has won the three other golf majors (US Open, The Open Championship, PGA Championship) during his career. Rory McIlroy joined team Omega in 2013 (after leaving his Audemars Piguet post) and likes to partake in #SpeedyTuesday fun on Instagram from time to time. His latest post featured a sleek Speedmaster Moonwatch “Dark Side of the Moon.”

The Audemars Piguet and Richard Mille Golfers

Audemars Piguet CEO, François-Henry Bennahmias was once a professional golfer and has brought his love of the sport to the watch company that he runs. Although Audemars Piguet lost Rory McIlroy to Omega, one of AP’s golf ambassadors, Danny Willet captured the title at the 80th Masters in 2016, beating out defending champion, Jordan Spieth. During the trophy ceremony, a beaming Danny Willett donned a black carbon Royal Oak Offshore on his wrist and has worn a slew of different Audemars Piguet watches since.

Richard Mille’s Bubba Watson has already won the Masters twice in the past (2012, 2014) and both times he had on a white RM038 watch (two different versions) while playing. After all, these super lightweight and ultra-expensive timepieces were built to withstand the G forces common with golf swings – and we all know the power of Bubba’s shots!

We’ll be following along closely to see who will stand at the top of the leaderboard this Sunday evening. And hopefully, we’ll also spot an awesome top-tier watch on the wrist of the champion holding up the 2019 Masters Trophy!
